Supreme Court PDP Judgement ...Senator Akpabio responds.

The Supreme Court yesterday declared Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Makarfi had approached the apex court to affirm him as the chairman of the party after the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt Rivers state had in February this year, ruled that former Borno state governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, was the authentic national chairman of PDP.

Makarfi who has the support of all the PDP state governors, filed a petition at the apex court and judgement was delivered accordingly. The Senate minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has issued a robust comment. Read his response below:

"On the Supreme Court victory we are saying there is no victor, no vanquished. We are delighted that justice has been done, because it shows the supremacy of the party. It shows the will of the people. It shows that indeed the National Working Committee of the party is subservient when it comes to the issue of the national convention of the party. That decision has been settled today by the Supreme Court".

"I want to tell all and sundry that there is no victor no vanquished. And whilst congratulating the entire Nigerians and lovers of democracy, and particularly PDP faithful across the country, I want to urge those who were affected by the various tussles to come back and let us build the party together.

I think it is important for democracy for us to have a viable alternative at any point in time. Even in America they have the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. It was a family quarrel. But never again should we allow a family quarrel to get to the point where we have to call on the court to settle it for us. We have to build the party together irrespective of those who won and those who may feel they lost".

"I must use this opportunity to congratulate the courage of the judiciary for taking the right decision at a time like this. It is important at this point for Nigeria to show that democracy can survive. And the only way Nigerians can show democracy can survive is for us to depend on the judiciary. And the judiciary has come forward to show that it will continue to dispense justice irrespective of whose ox is gored.

As a PDP faithful and the Minority Leader of the Senate, I am excited about the verdict and I am calling on all those who probably had one issue or the other to know that there are no factions as far as the PDP is concerned. We should all come back together.

I must also congratulate the APC, the reason being that they are now happy because some of them were worried that in the event that they did not have a home in the APC, where will they be? Now the umbrella has been stretched out for them. So the APC members are equally very happy and I congratulate them on this verdict. The victory is not for PDP. It is a victory for democracy. And the victory is for all Nigerians who love democracy. This is a great beginning for Nigeria".
